Caged Projects

OK, we’ve got all this netting around and about which we use to keep things in place while we’re underway.  Works well.  Now, we have a new purpose for it–to keep kitty cat Beryl away from the ongoing professional work-related projects.  We have one pilot berth which has been dedicated to storing sails. Now, it’s only 1/2 full of sails and the other half is now dedicated to an 18″x24″ optical breadboard all loaded up with scientific camera, mirrors, and all kinds of wires that we really don’t want kitty chewing through.  So–the netting is now a vertical barrier, a cage, to keep Beryl away from the project.

Below, is a picture of the tiny workspace with the netting removed.

Project People

Ok, everyone here knows David and I as more-or-less the “project people” and nothing has changed really. Since we’ve been in San Francisco for the last months we’ve been more or less tied up in interesting work-related projects and not really posting a whole lot here about boat-related things. We finally decided we needed an outlet for the little “aside” projects which aren’t directly related to our client’s work but that are interesting to some of our techy friends. Thus, we’ve set up a parallel blog for ramblings about projects, small business, and entrepreneurship while living aboard and cruising. You can see it here at startupanywhere.org

Circles and Splices

Everything comes around again. I’d promised a friend with a schooner that I’d show him how to splice his double braid rope. Not too hard to do. However, I’d not realized how difficult it can be to splice OLD braid. So, I took my handy little splicing wand with me (a Brion Toss original) as well as my bag of various splicing stuff. My friend pulled out his Sampson splicing fid (of a variety I’d not seen before) and we proceeded to break the puller string in my wand and to have huge problems with his fid pushing the core braid through. Overall, a few hours went by and the splice still wasn’t complete. So, what comes around again? The friend is probably just going to end up seizing the line around his snap shackle rather than having a proper splice. He started out with a seizing. It all comes around.
