Nothing’s pretty right now

As we get further into the project, I can truly say, well, it’s just getting uglier. Yes, the boat is becoming more structurally sound. But, there’s nary a good lookin’ place on her. I was beginning to forget what she looked like before. I went back to the original images we took in February 2006. The pictures were taken of the blocks, fittings, winches, windlass, all the things that I figured we’d forget about once the project was in swing. I was right. We have forgotten half the stuff that we have in boxes belonging to Mahdee. Back then, I though the pics were ugly because they revealed all the wear and tear. Now I think she looked ok!

2 Thoughts.

  1. I noticed that when I got a few floors and frames in my boat, my back and ribs felt better. Have you noticed this??
Maybe we will feel prettier or more handsome when the planks are on and the paint and varnish are about perfect.
I was wondering what experience that the yard has in gluing purpleheart? It is something I haven’t tried.
What saw did they use to rip purpleheart laminations for the stem? Big!?!

  2. Hum…that means I’ve got another several months of “ugly” here. But, wow, I’ll be feeling like a whole new person then!

This was the first glue up of purpleheart (stem knee) for the yard. The floors are solid pupleheart, not lams, by the way. The yard has a professional associate who’d worked with laminating purpleheart before. They used a cabinet (table) saw for the purpleheart–then planed it. Their cabinet saw has an unusually large blade in it but it still had to cut, flip, cut the other side. Wastes the width of the blade, of course. But the yard band saw couldn’t have done the job.
